The Adoption Process
Cardiff Dogs Home and Newport City Dogs Home operate a re-homing procedure which aims to find the best possible home for each dog in our care. If you visit either, or both shelters looking for a new family pet, please go with an open mind and be prepared to be guided by the staff. Remember - they know the dogs and their aim is to provide a home where the dog will be happy as well as the family. Not all dogs may be available for re-homing as some are stray dogs due to be reclaimed by their owners, some may already be reserved (pending home checks, introductions, etc) whilst others are under assessment for medical or behavioral problems. Once you have spent time with one of our dogs and are satisfied that you would like to offer the dog a home the staff will guide you through the process.
You'll be given help and advice on selecting the most suitable dog for you, your family and where you live by people who put the welfare and happiness of the dog first.
You will know that your new dog will have been vaccinated, wormed and checked with our own vet. The adoption fee ,includes microchipping, first vaccinations, and neutering. Adoption fees start at £110, depending on the age and breed of the dog. When you re-home a dog from Cardiff Dogs' Home or Newport City Dogs Home you will be giving a previously unwanted dog a brand new start in life.
Applications
The staff will take up to 3 applications for each dog, and will accept applications from the day the dog arrives at the Home. Once the dog has reached it's 'due date' (after it has spent 7 days at the home) the staff will look through the applications and try to select the most appropriate home for that dog. They consider things like the age, training needs, exercise levels etc of the dog, and the previous experience, working hours, other family members (including children and residents pets) of the potential rehomers. If a dog already has 3 applications, it can be worth keeping in touch with the staff to check whether a dog has in fact been rehomed. An 'approved' application doesn't always mean a dog is definitely going to his or her new home. People (quite rightly) need to make absolutely sure that they have made the perfect choice, and it can take a few visits before they know for certain. Sometimes introductions with their own dog do not go well. Sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes, on reflection, they keep looking. It's a good thing that people think long and hard before they commit to sharing their life with a particular dog, and it is important that they are absolutely sure they have made the right choice. If you are unsuccessful in your first choice, please don't give up. If a dog has 3 applications it does mean that 2 of them will be disappointed. That doesn't mean that you are not a potentially great home for a rescue dog, just that the particular dog you chose might be better suited to an different household.
Requirements
All homes are considered on merit, but there are a few criteria that you need to meet. Generally any resident pets need to be fully vaccinated and neutered. Your garden needs to be 100% secure, and the home will not consider full time workers for puppies. In some circumstances the staff may also require rehomers to have breed experience, especially for large breeds and northern breeds. It is a condition of adoption that all rehomed dogs are booked in for neutering at the earliest opportunity with the shelters' vets, if not already neutered at the time of adoption. The staff reserve the right to homecheck all applicants and to take up veterinary references. Before you are finally approved for adoption, all family members, visiting children and resident pets (including cats) need to meet the dog at the Home to ensure that the 'chemistry' is right for everyone involved.
